Explore how this vibrant Apple TV dramedy blends humor and heartfelt moments to showcase the unique charm and depth of Mexican culture through diverse characters and witty storytelling.

From Mexico with Love
If you haven’t already tuned into "Acapulco" on Apple TV+, stop everything and dive in—you won’t regret it. This show is a rare gem that had me hooked from the very first scene. And trust me, it’s not just because of its stunning production or the beautiful backdrop of Puerto Vallarta (although, let’s be real, those alone are worth watching for). I was personally recommended this series by none other than Vanessa Bauche herself, and I can honestly say it’s one of the best pieces of TV I’ve seen in a long time.
A Cultural Masterpiece
First off, the scenery is a total dream. Having visited almost all of Mexico’s Pacific beaches, I can say "Acapulco" really nails it. The series is a visual feast, with the Barceló Puerto Vallarta Hotel and the Westin Resort & Spa serving as the glamorous Las Colinas Resort. The bright pink walls, the glistening pools, the striped cabanas—it’s a paradise that feels so quintessentially Mexican, and it makes me nostalgic for every coastal trip I’ve ever taken.
But what really pulled me in was the cast and the script. Eugenio Derbez—who plays present-day Maximo—has always had a magical way of making us laugh. Most Mexicans, including myself, are practically conditioned to burst out laughing the moment we see him. Derbez is a comedic legend, but the man has range. He’s tricked us before with the depth of his dramatic performances in Instructions Not Included, Radical, and Coda. In Acapulco, though, he plays with our emotions on a whole different level. Every episode takes you on a ride from laughter, to nostalgia, to tears, back to laughter, then crying again. Each one touches your most intimate emotional chords, leaving you both entertained and moved.

The cast is massive—over 150 actors!—but everyone brings their A-game, with standout performances across the board. The young Maximo, played by Enrique Arrizon, is a character you can’t help but root for. He’s this lovable mix of naive optimism and realistic hope, and his chemistry with his best friend Memo (the hilarious Fernando Carsa) and the smart, quick-witted Julia (Camila Perez) is spot-on. And then there’s Chad, played by Chord Overstreet, whose comedic timing is just flawless. Honestly, the way these actors handle the dialogue—what I like to call "The Derbez Humor"—is impeccable.
A Personal Ode to Vanessa Bauche
Vanessa Bauche is an undeniable force in "Acapulco," bringing depth and nuance to her role as Nora, Maximo’s overprotective yet loving mother. Her portrayal perfectly balances humor with heartfelt moments, showcasing her ability to navigate complex emotions with ease. It’s no surprise that her performance earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress, Comedy (Television) at the Imagen Awards, where "Acapulco" led all series nominations. Bauche's work is a standout in a series already celebrated for its strong ensemble, and this recognition cements her as one of the top talents in the industry. With "Acapulco" continuing to break barriers and charm audiences globally, Vanessa’s acting is a cornerstone of its success, making her nomination well-deserved.
The Genius of Derbez: Thinking-Man’s Comedy
If you’ve ever seen Derbez’s old Mexican shows like "Derbez en Cuando" or "Al Derecho y al Derbez," you know what I mean by "The Derbez Humor." It’s that clever, layered humor that makes you think for a second before delivering a punchline so obvious it hits you and makes you laugh until your stomach hurts.
Remember when Derbez made that joke about the border wall while presenting Coco at the Oscars, and nobody in the room got it? Well, who had the last laugh? (Literally!) Now we see American actors like Wendie Malick, Kevin Dunn, and Julian Sedgwick absolutely nailing the signature "Derbez Humor." It’s a fresh, clever, cross-cultural style of comedy that is uniquely Derbez.
I also have to highlight how well this show portrays Mexican culture. From the hospitality, family values, and respect toward others, to the colorful traditions, food, and problem-solving spirit—it’s all there, wrapped up in every interaction at Las Colinas. "Acapulco" is more than a comedy; it’s a celebration of Latino talent and culture, both on and off the screen. The production itself sets an example for diversity in workplaces, with Latino talent shining in every role, in front of and behind the camera.

And let’s not forget the music! The soundtrack is a nostalgic trip back to the ‘80s, but with a twist—you’ll have to watch to understand. Each song perfectly complements the vibrant atmosphere of Acapulco, fitting seamlessly into every scene like a perfect frame. Oh, and pay close attention to the episode titles—they're clever and add an extra layer of amusement you definitely won’t want to miss!

Acapulco Season 4 Is Coming!
And the best news? Apple recently announced that Acapulco will be back for Season 4 in 2025! If you haven’t caught up with the first three seasons yet, now’s the time. Every episode delivers something special, and I promise you’ll be laughing, crying, and loving every minute of it. Huge applause to 3Pas Studios and everyone involved for betting on this show and giving us a series that truly stands out in today’s TV landscape.
So go ahead, treat yourself to a stay at Las Colinas for three seasons—you’ll leave with a heart full of joy, a smile...and a bit of impatience, as season four is only in the works!
